The digging yesterday and today has now settled the ownership of this largest of our mastabas. The Count Ankhaf, who married the eldest daughter of Khufu, Hetepheres. A small party has now been sent to explore the mastaba for a pit immediately behind the stela of this princess.
(5) G 7631
The men are now engaged in clearing the northeastern cover of this mastaba and in emptying pit A. Here they have reached the depth of 7.30 meters with robbers' debris there and many inscribed ushabtis of blue glaze and small hieroglyphs incised have been found [GLYPHS] [Psamtik]. These are probably of Ptolemaic date. A little above this level are the entrances of four chambers, all opened by earlier robbers. The southeastern corner of the mastaba is being left temporarily unexcavated.
The men lent to Dr. Borchardt are now clearing the central portions of the east and south faces of the Great Pyramid. On the south they have already laid bare about 150 cm of casing block. Herr Rusch came out today to inspect this work and he was shown around most of our excavations.
This morning Sharif Pasha Sabry, brother of the Queen of Egypt, visited the works and was shown round. He brought several friends with him. After receiving permission from Reisner leave was given to representatives of the Arabic Press to take photographs in the excavations, not for publication in Europe.
