of concession. The mastabas in each row are numbered 1, 2, 3 from west to east. The railway starts between III 1 and IV 3 [= G 4340]. Just west of the latter is IV 2 [= G 4240], the site of Kafr-el-Haram thieves' work last spring.

Saturday, January 6, 1912

A bright still day, much warmer. Work is now going on finely and four gangs at different points are clearing the mastabas of sand. At present the railway is carrying sand only from the cross track between IV 3-4 [= G 4340 & G 4440] and III 1-2. That from between IV 2-3 [= G 4240 & G 4340] and IV 2 [= G 4240] being a short carry is being used to build out the railway dump as it advances opposite to them.
Of III 1 and IV 3 [= G 4340] the faces are not yet reached, only the inner masonry of very large irregular blocks of the local stone of the plateau, characteristically purplish in color.
At the southeast corner of IV 2 [= G 4240] the last year's excavation has been cleared disclosing the offering room built before the mastaba and the false door. It has this plan:
