section. Clearing interior of Lepsius 51 (G 4321). Came on small pits on west.

Work at northeast edge was extended to clear the face of the mastaba east G 2187 and up to the unnumbered mastaba G 2300 [= G 5190] east of G 2190. The mastaba east of G 2187 I have numbered G 2196 and as it presents certain peculiarities of superstructure, I must clear it at least partially.

As I sat down to work this morning, a messenger from the works rushed in breathless and excited "Laqena maskhut - kedda ragil - quais gaqi". "We have found a statue - life size - extremely beautiful." I hurried down the hill to a disappointment and to a remarkable discovery.
The drop in the rock noticed between G 2187 and G 2196 develops into a cliff at least 2 meters high under G 2196. In clearing the pit X the men came on the door of a chamber opening to the south. The top of the chamber was about 2
