day 51

(1) G 5110, G 4910
Work on back of G 5110 at southwest corner removing sand limestone chips, and at southwest corner of G 4910.

(2) East of G 4920, G 4821
Work on street east of G 4920. A small mud brick mastaba on a higher level as G 4821. Walls coated black

(3) G 4940
Pit G 4940 B. Sand, gravel, and fragments inscribed stones.

Col. Elliot of the Engineers A.I.F. came and informed me that the ranges were being rebuilt and he trusted no more ricochets would come over the camp.

Wednesday, January 6, 1915
day 52

(1) Between G 5210 and G 5110
Work between G 5210 and G 5110. Clearing sand and debris from street working northwards.

(2) East of G 4920
Work on street east of G 4920.

Work in front of G 4910. Floor on a level with floor in G 4920 covered with hard gravel debris which flows over broken back wall of G 5010. [ILLUSTRATION]

(4) G 4940
Work on pit G 4940 B. Debris in lower part is coarse and mixed with fragments of inscribed limestone slabs. In northeast corner on a level with top of doorway a reserve head of white limestone. This is very roughly cut especially around the eyes and forehead, and was covered with a layer of plaster in which the features were finely molded. The plaster is entirely gone except from the left side between the mouth and nose. The chamber remains to be cleaned.

Sandstorm came up about 10 a.m., reached its height between 12 and 2 and moderated after dark.

Story arrived in the evening.
Chaplain and Staff Officers of Fifth Battalion A.I.F. came to see the excavations.
