the landing at Salonica but not opposed to it. On September 25, the French and English took the offensive in France, but after a brilliant preliminary success, they have made little headway to date. Russia is holding strongly and has turned the G.A.'s back in some places. On the whole, the outlook is gloomy. The Anglo-F. force at the Dardanelles must be in a critical position or at any rate will be when the Germans have forced their way through to Cospole. For it does not seem to me possible to the Serbs or the Salonica force to stop the determined German Bulgarian armies.
Mackensen about four hundred fifty thousand (450,000) men.
Bulgarians about three hundred fifty thousand (350,00) men.
About eight hundred thousand (800,000) men.
Servia and helpers about three hundred thousand (300,000) men.
Salonica force about one hundred fifty thousand (150,000) men (?).
About four hundred fifty thousand (450,000) men.
Turkey must also have two or three thousand (2 to 3,000) men to spare under the hope of speedy relief, while Russia can hardly do anything on the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast and Italy will not help. Greece and Romania remain neutral, very foolishly, I think. Together they could turn the scale.
So we may expect a dangerous situation in Egypt this winter, and I feel some doubt as to the possibility of my leaving Cairo.
