of a sarcophagus of Mokattam limestone; a small fragment from the neck of a portrait head; a block of limestone roughly cut to resemble a fat peanut: [ILLUSTRATION] and about 40 cm in length. The large alabaster bowl was found in the debris under the head recovered yesterday. Many fragments of mud seals were found (twenty of fair size). None of these apparently bore seal impressions and none came from jars, though the impression left by strings are common.

(Fisher left on 6 p.m. train for America).

Day of rest for men.

Tuesday, November 18, 1913

Mr. Wellcome came at sunset and stayed to dinner. J.L. Smith came to lunch.

Men at work in chamber of G 4240. Finished at sunset. Cubicle in floor on southeast corner. Chamber not lined. Cracks in rock cemented. The pit descends 120 cm below door. Apparently the intention was to make the pit still deeper but they came on bedrock and cut in 120 cm above it where the rock was better.

Refas left for Quft.

Wednesday, November 19, 1913

West left for Kerma on the 8 p.m. train. Gave him lists of stores, equipment, gangs and instructions for travelling and work. Gave him 20 L (pounds) for travelling expenses and 100 L (pounds) for wages, etc., at Kerma.

Men on sand around G 4240.

Joseph Lindon Smith came about 5 p.m. to stay to paint the Yasen [Iasen] tomb (G 2196) and undertook also to do the male head from G 4140.

Thursday, November 20, 1913

Began work clearing the pit in G 4440. Clean sand.

Friday, November 21, 1913

Men working the Khufu's cemetery mastaba No. G 4440. One reis, five men in pit, three on sand and two sitting on edge of pit emptying pulley baskets. The debris consists of clear sand only. No potsherds to be seen. The pit (a) now being cleared has reached a depth of 8 or 9 meters and a small hole (b) dug by us to show filling is about 1 meter deep.
There are four rows of masonry showing on the west (mastaba G 4440) of the core, four on the north, two on the
