Under 555, 516b, is .5 cm of granular dust, gray more or less stained with decayed wood powder. Along the south edge of 721 this rests on rock but further south and west on thin layer of limestone floor dust. In the upper dust, scraps of black gold and plaster and two fragments of bright gold.

Cleaned up under 556, 557 and 558 and found six fragments of gold and inlays (569).

Removed No. 553 and adjacent wood.
No. 553: A copper clamp.

The metal has been driven into wood 3.5 cm thick and the prongs hammered over along the grain of the wood. The wood may be traced, to east under 562 and beyond.

Eed el-Dahiyeh.

Went to palace, full evening dress, European notables at 9:20 a.m.. Merten, Naus, Winship, Foucart, Stewart, Borchardt, Crumemlyn, etc. Arrived early and found a crowd besieging the book (one only), signed, were shown into a waiting room, marched upstairs, halted by Zulficar until proper moment and sent in to shake hands hurriedly with His Majesty. Then signed book of the Queen, and so home.
