Working on trenches 24 - 26. We expose three more pits v [G 7000 SW 5], vi [G 7000 SW 6], vii [G 7000 SW 7], all of the same square Old Kingdom type about 220 - 240 cm deep, dug in debris and rubble lined.

[ILLUSTRATION]

The layer of rubbish 3 - 4 meters deep which lies over the rock is older than these pits. The pits belonged to small mastaba (small stone-cased, or rubble with mud plaster, or crude brick) which have been entirely destroyed. It is possible that the upper meter of debris is a late deposit; but in any case Saite-Roman burials have been made in the top meter. A number of objects of this period were found today.
