Removed course 1.
* Photo: debris under course 1 *B5886
I went down and examined debris under course 1. This extends south as far as coffin (small white chips towards south) and runs down over settled debris (filling) of lower pit. The surface is dirty in places with dust and decayed mud and is imprinted with outlines of stones of course 1. In the northeast corner were more potsherds of the basin found in course 1. A little further south were two more small potsherds of ordinary red ware. I ordered this debris to be removed as far as the edge of lower pit (north and east edges) and to within 10 cm of coffin.
The debris was removed by Said Ahmed and Mohammed Tammam.

Dunham descended about 2 p.m. and began scale plan of stones and fragments of wood and gold in lower pit and on its eastern edge. Unfinished at 4:00 p.m. when I went down.
Various photos were taken.
