Sunday, February 7, 1915

Clearing large rubble debris from burial pit of 2091 [= G 3091], and pits A and B of 3000 which were full of dark rubble and limestone, in A of 3000 were fragments of a number of rough pottery jars. Work is proceeding along East and West sides of 3000 and between this and 3010; also between 3010 and 3020; between 3020 and 3030 and in the offering of 3030.
Last evening Mr. Williams came up from the Australian camp and told me of the German aviator who was captured on the Canal. The German had in his pockets plans of all the camps in Egypt and £4000 in gold (sic.) He had descended to rest and was sitting with his back against a tree when a Sikh crept up behind him and tied him to the tree. (The story is more interesting than credible. C. S. F.) In the battle on the Canal, the Turks lost nearly 3000 in killed, wounded and prisoners on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th of February. They tried to cross[?] the Canal by means of rafts and pontoons.

Rest day. I visited Abousir and Saqqara, spending the whole day on the trip.
