…mastaba G 4940. In debris three fragments of ornamented false door in relief; a male skull; and a basket full of potsherds. The potsherds include a two-handled foreign jar, imitation Keneh-ware jar, and red-polished basins and bowls (one with a spout).

Sunday, January 10, 1915

Cleaning street between G. 5110 and massive wall. Work on burial shaft 4930 B. Work on burial shafts 4940 A and B. (Shaft B and chamber finished).

Monday, January 11, 1915

Day of rest for the men. Fisher and I went to Cairo, and visited the Museum.

Tuesday, January 12, 1915

Finished cleaning burial pit 5030 A. In the chamber were a few human bones. Finished cleaning offering chamber of mastaba 4940. The walls are covered with reliefs. In front of the principal niche a rough hole in the floor which contained a skull and some other bones. Two Roman Catholic chaplains, A.I.F., came to see the works. They said about ¼ of the force were Roman Catholic Irish.
